Understanding The Secret Chambers Of The Great Pyramid

By Janine Hughes

Of all the man- made structures at Giza and Egypt generally, the Great Pyramid is the oldest and largest. In fact, it is the oldest among the Seven Wonders of the old world and was built as the final resting place for Pharaoh Khufu. Recently, there has been speculation about the discovery of secret chambers of the Great Pyramid. They are believed to house the remains of Khufu whose final resting place has not been discovered yet.

To start with, only three Chambers are already known to the world. The first two are on the upper side and are informally referred to as the Kings and the Queens Chamber respectively. The other one is called the base and serves as support for the rest of this giant structure. Two tunnels blocked by stone doors arise from the Queens section and its said that the tunnels probably lead to a secret chamber.

The Great Pyramid is adorned with four known shafts. Two of its shafts are from Chambers of the King and the other two in the Queens. The Kings shafts lead to the exterior of this structure while it is not known where those from the Queens lead to. All other pyramids lack shafts and therefore its not easy to solve this mystery.

Pyramid explorers employ the use of robots to explore these giant structures as shafts are too small for a person to get into. The first robot to explore began work in 1992 and discovered a door with two copper handles in the Southern shaft of Queens section. This was 200 feet up the shaft and was unusual, because other pyramids in Egypt have not been found to have such doors.

What lay behind the door is only a matter of speculation. To some, it is the secret chamber with the remains of Pharaoh. For others, the doors were built to confuse anyone dumb enough to try stealing Khufus treasures. Still others claim that the solution to the puzzle that is the mystery doors reveals the exact resting place of Khufus remains and his treasures.

The explorers returned in 2002 with a newly developed robot. The robot was capable of drilling and therefore it was able to go through the first door. With a camera inserted, it took pictures of yet another door, only 20 centimeters from the first. Mysterious, strange and unusual to find yet another door in the Southern shaft, yet no other pyramids have doors and even the Kings section does not have any doors.

In 2014, another robot went up the tunnels and discovered hieroglyphs made in red paint as well as carvings in the stone. The carvings and the hieroglyphs are almost 4,500 years old made during the construction of chambers. Scientists think that if the hieroglyphs are deciphered, more information about the shafts would be uncovered.

It is the tallest and oldest structure on the planet before us and is magnificent in every sense of this world. But we are yet to understand it, know why it was built and solve all its mysteries. We hope in time and with advanced technology, we are able to do that.
